The CPA (Cost Per Acquisition or Cost Per Action) is a measure that estimates the cost of acquiring a paying customer through various paid channels. Simply put, the CPA measures how much it costs to convert somebody from a visitor to a client.

CPA is a metric used to measure the real expense of acquiring a potential client who clicks on a website link – in other words, the return on marketing investment, in particular, the total marketing spend on total front-end conversions.

HOW IS IT CALCULATED? 🔢

The CPA can be calculated by dividing the cost by the conversion. This is important in various fields of marketing such as content marketing, social media marketing and many others. For publicists, CPA advertising is a crucial aspect as it is normally less dicey than alternative advertising approaches.

With CPA advertising, they too only pay when they have achieved their goal. For example, a visitor fills out a form with his e-mail address which can then be added to a list of potential customers. Since many online companies operate differently, there is no default way to determine a “good CPA” and basically, it all depends on your average income per customer.

Naturally, there are other factors such as budget or current business stage that can affect your Cost Per Acquisition. Another similar metric is eCPA (actual cost per action) which is used to measure the effectiveness of your advertising inventory, usually purchased through CPC (cost per click) or CPI (cost per impression).

CPA COMPARED WITH CPC AND CPM 📊

  • CPA is a measure based on sales and leads, which differentiates it from cost per impression (CPM) and cost per click (CPC). While CPM and CPC are based on eyes and traffic, CPA is based on specific lead generation actions.
  • The Cost Per Acquisition is on par with ROI (return on investment), although it is not synonymous, because it can be an early indicator of long-term campaign success in terms of lead generation.
  • Continuous optimization for a lower CPA can help marketers respond agilely based on campaign performance, leading to more efficient campaigns overall.
