So, what does user testing means? In our Step-by-Step Guide to UX Design, we briefly discussed user testing. Today, we will discuss this process more in-depth.

The goal of user testing is to discover problems and gain insights that you can use to improve your final website or product. How do you do this? Well, it can be done by giving a few or more users access to your UX design prototype and studying how they behave when they are using your website or service.

User Testing

Naturally, you cannot expect the testing phase to show and eliminate all potential problems at once. That is simply not possible with just one test. User testing is a continuous phase that you need to constantly work on.

It is a great way to create the best possible experience for your users and audience. Through user testing, you can improve and optimize your website, products, and services better and constantly.

Now, the two biggest questions when it comes to user testing are often “What do I test?” and “When do I test it?” Well, the answers to these questions, my friends, are pretty simple, and that is to test as much as possible, as often as possible and of course, as early as possible.

As stated in our Step-by-Step Guide to UX Design article, user testing is not as simple as giving someone access to your site asking them what they think. There is actually a very detailed set process which happens as follows:

Formulate A Question To Test

As we said, one of the biggest questions when it comes to user testing is “What do I test?” To find the answer to this question, you need to spend a little time nailing down exactly why you want to perform a test. You will also need to write down what you hope to learn and achieve from this test.

To make this process a lot easier, you can write a clear set of questions to test. Go through the set of questions you have written and prioritize what is more important. This first step will help you in choosing the participants you want to test.

Choosing and Preparing A Test

Now that you have listed down the questions you want to test, your priorities will show itself. Once you know what the purpose of your test is, it is time to decide on a specific methodology you can use. There are a few different techniques and methodologies, so in able to choose the right one, you need to answer a few questions listed below:

How much time and money do I have for this test?

How many participants do I want to test?

What facilities are available?

At what stage is the project?

User-Testing Methodologies

After answering the questions above, you should start to begin understanding what your test will be, and how you would like to conduct it. As we’ve mentioned earlier, there are different ways to conduct UX user testing. Some of them are listed below:

Hallway testing – these are the type of tests that are quick and informal. It is mostly done in the office, and often involve stopping someone in the hallway and asking them if they are interested to take a quick test. Usually, Hallway testing is used to perform broad, rough testing. It helps spot any glaring errors that the UX team hasn’t seen yet.

Observation and User Labs – through observation and user labs, you can study the user’s behavior; they’re body language, facial expressions, and reaction. These behaviours say a lot about what they feel towards the tasks assigned to them. It also helps show the usability and intuitiveness of the website. Usually, user labs involve one participant at a time who is being tested and observed by one or more researchers. There are also some specialized testing labs that have one-way mirrors and video feeds that can help facilitate this. Or, you can also choose to set up a webcam streaming to a computer instead.

Split testing – another way to conduct user testing is through the split tests. This is also known as the A/B test which involves two distinct versions of the same website, product, or service with one specific element changed. For instance, one element is a different Call To Action button, a different color scheme or a different photo. The versions are then served to separate groups of users and you can study which one the users find more effective.

Other Ways to conduct UX User testing

Multivariate Testing – next, you have the multivariate testing which basically functions the same way as to split testing. The only difference is that there are several different elements on the page that are changed at the same time. This will help you determine which combination of elements work best.

Eye Tracking – another great way to conduct user testing is through eye tracking. This is where you record what exactly the users are looking at, and how their gaze behaves and travels across a web page. This type of test is useful for discovering whether or not the user understands the basic flow of the web page. Additionally, this test also helps you determine if certain elements are where users expect them to be.

Surveys – surveys are one of the most common ways to conduct user testing. It is a set of questionnaires that are usually distributed via your website. In the questions, it is important to ask the users for their opinions and impressions about the website.

Finding Subjects

Now that you have determined what type of test you want to use, you need to find subjects for testing. This is probably the biggest challenge you will face throughout the testing process. So, how do you find the right subjects? First, you need to draw up a list of the criteria you want your subjects to fill. Limit these criteria to the top three to five most important ones.

After that, you can spread the word about the test throughout various channels such as social media, magazine or newspaper print, through your friends and family, and etc. Once you get enough responses, you can now screen applicants and filter out the people who are suitable for the test and those who are not.

Testing Phase

You have the methodology decided, and you now have the audience. It is time to start testing.

Analyzation

Once the results come in, it is time to take the existing data and transform it into accurate, objective and useful insights.

Reporting

Now it is time to report the results of your UX test with the people who need them. These reports should be shared with the whole team who are involved in creating the UX design.

Implementing

This is the time to put your user testing outcomes into practice. Everything you learned and analysed from the tests should now be put or added into your prototype.

Start Again

As we’ve said earlier, user testing your UX design is a continuous process. Once you have finished testing one element, continue testing another, and some more to keep improving your web page.

© Image credits to Anni Roenkae

Now that you have set up your UX design prototype, it is not time to start testing.
